What it does.
Business analysts often need to compare a single measure across multiple categories , such as revenue by region, scores by product, headcount by team, or spending by vendor. Traditional bar charts can become visually heavy and harder to read when there are many categories. The Lollipop Chart keeps things simple by using a thin stem and a marker for each category, making values and rankings easier to compare at a glance. Adding a target for each category also makes it useful for quickly comparing performance against goals.
The visual automatically recognizes currency and percentage formats from your data model, so values and axis labels use the appropriate symbols without requiring extra configuration. When a target is provided, change labels can show the variance between the actual value and the target as an absolute value, a percentage, or both. Optional up/down triangle indicators make it easy to see whether performance is above or below the target.
You can also use conditional formatting to highlight categories based on numeric rules or field values. Marker size and color can each be controlled by a separate measure, allowing up to three metrics to be represented in the same visual. Reference lines and bands can be added to show targets, benchmarks, or acceptable ranges, while four marker shapes , Circle, Square, Diamond, and Triangle , provide additional flexibility for styling and accessibility.
The chart also includes a configurable baseline, which can be set to zero, a fixed value, or a measure such as the average. This makes it possible to show how values deviate from a chosen reference point.
Finally, the visual supports common Power BI interactions, including cross-filtering, drill-down, drill-through, report page tooltips, gridlines, and context menus, so it fits naturally into existing Power BI reports.
